Welcome Your Guests with an Inviting Front Door

Welcome Your Guests with an Inviting Front Door

With Christmas decor pouring over the aisles, it seems that the Christmas season is bigger than ever. Nothing makes a front door wreath look better than an inviting paint color. Here are a few paint colors to leave your guests in awe when they knock:

Sherwin Williams Parakeet Green SW 6711: This color is versatile for any time of the year. With olive green tones, this color creates a perfect backdrop for your holiday decor. In the spring, this shade will look refreshing and bright.

Sherwin Williams Decisive Yellow SW 6902: This is another color that can easily transition from season to season. With hints of mustard, canary and a tinge of orange, transitioning from the fall season into winter will bring a warm feeling to your home.

Benjamin Moore Caliente AF-290: This spicy red will leave your guests wow-ing as they walk in. It’s the perfect color for the holiday season, especially with a sparkly wreath. Not to mention, it’s Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2018!

Benjamin Moore Luxe AF-580: A sophisticated hue of grey and blue will create a classy and timeless look. This will easily pair with neutral colors and winter decor, especially with pale whites, greens, and beige.

Valspar Sangria Red CI113: If you’re looking for a traditional red but are wanting a more subdued feel, this is the perfect color. With warm, cinnamon spice feels, you’ll be in the Christmas spirit in no time!

5 Reasons To Freshen Up Your Home’s Interior Paint

5 Reasons To Freshen Up Your Home’s Interior Paint

There are many perks to refreshing your home with paint. You should aim to repaint every couple of years. Here’s why:

Your Paint Color Is Out of Style – What was once considered a popular color a couple years ago has most likely outdated your home. It’s best to stay away from fad colors such as salmon, olive green, or royal purple. There’s no shame in trying fad colors, especially if you like them. The rule of thumb is to try to keep a fresh coat of paint in your home yearly or every other year if you decide to go with fad colors.

The Room Feels Off – If you feel like something is off when you walk into the room, it may be the paint color! Some paint colors can make a room feel small or dark. Others might make a room feel too big or busy. Experiment with color and find out what mood you are trying to accomplish, and what makes you feel most like home.

Your Paint is Damaged – Stained, chipped, cracked or fading paint can instantly make a room look bad. No worries if you are in love with the color! Paint color can easily be matched. It is best to go with a full paint job rather than patching/covering damaged spots. This way you won’t be able to see where damage has been repaired or painted over.

Your Home Accessories Clash with the Color – You may have a certain theme that runs through your home or through each room. Paint color can polish a room instantly and tie all of your room accessories together seamlessly.

You’ve Redesigned the Room – Maybe you’ve converted your son’s bedroom into a guest room. Or maybe you’ve converted the kitchen room into an open concept dining space. Paint helps transition one room to another, and can easily change the style of a room.

5 Things You Should Know Before Volunteering

5 Things You Should Know Before Volunteering

There are thousands of homes that have recently been devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Equally, there are thousands who have volunteered to help. If you are interested in helping to clear out a house, make sure you know these tips before you start:

  • Don’t count on the organization you are volunteering with to provide all of the necessary equipment, tools, and protection. You need to make sure that you have everything you need to be able to pack materials, move heavy furniture, pull fiberglass or sheet rock, etc. Bring items such as water bottles (or a canister of water), a face breathing mask, protective eye wear, and gloves.
  • Don’t start tackling a home until you have confirmed with the owner that they have first taken pictures of everything (including the water line stains for measurement). Secondl, they should have contacted their insurance agent to confirm with them that it is okay to start demolition. Lastly, ask the owner before you start packing and tearing down walls or cabinets. Remember that the person whose home was just damaged is probably in a state of shock or devastation. Seeing their items being thrown away might be a little too much for them to handle.
  • Know how to constructively gut a house. Walls should be marked at either 2 feet or at 4 feet and no where in between or above. This will help professional sheet rock installers, and will cut labor costs in half for the homeowner. Precisely measure out how high the water rose in their home and then measure accordingly before cutting into the wall.
  • The general rule to follow is to throw away anything that touched water. Mold and germs easily develop in flood waters and on things that have touched the water, including clothes, walls, cabinets, toys, and carpets. Mold cannot be washed or soaked out of these items. Some furniture and cabinets may be able to be replaced under warranty. Check with the home owner first.
  • If you struggle with any type of condition (such as allergies or joint aches) that limits your capability to stand or do extraneous activity for long periods of time, DON’T put yourself at risk. This is a very physical job that requires being able to bend down, lift, and stand for hours. There are many ways to volunteer to help victims of Hurricane Harvey.
Looks That Are Outdating Your Home

Looks That Are Outdating Your Home

Watch out for these looks that may be out dating your home:

Unpainted cabinets: Wood stained cabinets are a thing of the past; they tend to make the room feel heavy and dark. Light colored cabinets create a refreshing and open look, and make a space feel much larger. Stick with colors such as white, grey, or light antique green.

Wallpaper borders: Although some wall papered walls can look stylish (depending on the design and placement), wallpapered borders that wrap around the room are way out. Think of using wallpaper as an accent design- too much design will make the room look busy, so be sparing with it.

Sponge paint: This style of painting has the same effect as wallpaper- if you’re not careful, you will make the room look too busy. Sponge paint is simply an outdated technique and should be avoided.

Splotchy beige tiles: These 12 x 12 inch beige/sandy colored ceramic tiles are a bore. Many home styling experts quickly pull out these grouted tiles to replace with wood, modern tiles, or concrete.

Fad trends: Trend-of-the-moment paint colors (such as peach, pink, mauve, and hunter green), furniture (chevron pattern, the ornate vintage look, and colorful stripes), or even drapery and bed comforters (with out of style patterns) can easily go out of date. However, keeping up with fads isn’t necessarily a “don’t”. Just make sure to keep up with the latest trends and mix in classic pieces so that you don’t get overwhelmed!

A rule of thumb- keep up with the latest trends with websites, magazines, and articles; mix in a few classic pieces, and you won’t have to worry about falling behind.

Do’s and Don’ts of Accessorizing a Space

Do’s and Don’ts of Accessorizing a Space

Whether you are designing an office space or a living room, there is always a fine line between under accessorizing and over accessorizing. It’s important to get the balance right to create a perfect atmosphere for your clients, or for your home. If you’re having trouble designing your space, here are some do’s and don’ts to follow:

Don’t start with the small stuff (i.e. vases, decorative books, picture frames).

DO invest in cabinets, tables, desks, chairs, etc.. Starting with accessories can be overwhelming when trying to figure out where to put them after you have bought furniture.

Don’t distribute individual accessories around the room. This creates a cluttered, messy look.

DO arrange them in groups, combining items that share a similar texture or palette. A variety in size and shape can be pleasing to the eye when these items are placed near one another.

Don’t pair same sized items atop a too large or too small surface.

DO pay attention to scale. Pairing too large accessories together on top of a small table can make the table look even smaller- and not in a good way. Make sure to give your accessories a good blend between size, shape, and height when accessorizing a table, cabinet, or desk.

Don’t limit yourself to typical accessories.

DO use unordinary objects to create a statement. Try incorporating an old microscope or a half of an old chair into your decor; whatever you can find that has a unique shape or story! Unconventional pieces can make a space admirable and unique, and are much more fun to look at than a typical clock or vase sitting on the table.
