Watch out for these looks that may be out dating your home:
Unpainted cabinets: Wood stained cabinets are a thing of the past; they tend to make the room feel heavy and dark. Light colored cabinets create a refreshing and open look, and make a space feel much larger. Stick with colors such as white, grey, or light antique green.
Wallpaper borders: Although some wall papered walls can look stylish (depending on the design and placement), wallpapered borders that wrap around the room are way out. Think of using wallpaper as an accent design- too much design will make the room look busy, so be sparing with it.
Sponge paint: This style of painting has the same effect as wallpaper- if you’re not careful, you will make the room look too busy. Sponge paint is simply an outdated technique and should be avoided.
Splotchy beige tiles: These 12 x 12 inch beige/sandy colored ceramic tiles are a bore. Many home styling experts quickly pull out these grouted tiles to replace with wood, modern tiles, or concrete.
Fad trends: Trend-of-the-moment paint colors (such as peach, pink, mauve, and hunter green), furniture (chevron pattern, the ornate vintage look, and colorful stripes), or even drapery and bed comforters (with out of style patterns) can easily go out of date. However, keeping up with fads isn’t necessarily a “don’t”. Just make sure to keep up with the latest trends and mix in classic pieces so that you don’t get overwhelmed!
A rule of thumb- keep up with the latest trends with websites, magazines, and articles; mix in a few classic pieces, and you won’t have to worry about falling behind.
